Weekly News November 18-22

Important Updates:
November 18: Mrs. Hurst is here!
November 22: Early Dismissal at 11:30
November 27-29: No School

Math: This week the mathematicians will be starting to review many of the concepts we have learned in unit 2. We will practice writing numbers using wikki sticks, paint in a bag, salt writing and more! We will learn about the characteristics of a hexagon and continue to review the characteristics of the other shapes we have learned. Students will apply their knowledge of the +1 and -1 patterns by playing different dice games.

Reading: Readers will learn that reading books is not just about using snap words, pointing, and starting to sound out letters, but also about making sure they understand what they are reading! We will work on retelling after reading, changing their voices to show they understand the book, and talking about their books with friends!

Writing: Writers will learn about the process of writing a sentence this week! A writer says a sentence in his/her mind, then writes it, writing word after word. Writers also reread often. They write a little, and the read a little, flipping back and forth to make sure that it sounds right and makes sense. They will also use a checklist to help them check over their work as they reread. Can you believe that these young writers are capable of such strong work?!

Researcher's Workshop: Students will experience different animal centers this week. The researchers will...
  • Read books on different animals
  • Look through animals books and then create a book of their own about what they've learned about different animals
  • Sort, uncover, title animal photos
  • Research animals using Pebble Go
  • Use rubbing plates, feathers, and other various art supplies to create art

November 11-15

Community Clothes Closet Donations
Hello NDLC families. The service group has started a new fall project. We are collecting gently used or new clothing for the Community Clothes Closet located in Menasha, Wisconsin. During conferences this year you can drop off items by the school office. We appreciate all donations.  Conference dates (since we already had ours) are November 14 and 19.

Important Dates and Reminders:

November 18: Mrs. Hurst joins us 😃
November 27-29: NO SCHOOL

Math: This week math will be all about exploring, practicing and solidifying our knowledge of the +1 pattern.  The students will learn the following poem and will make a book to show what happens when we add one to a number.

The + 1 Rhyme

1 small rabbit having fun,
Now I see another one.
1 plus 1 is 2.
2 small rabbits having fun,
Now I see another one.
2 plus 1 is 3.

We will also learn and play a dice game called Count On One.  Here is a link to the game.

Reading: Here are some things to work on with your SUPER READER at home!!

  •  Have your child hunt for snap words they know
  • Give your child the pattern on the first page of the book, then let them read the rest
  • Encourage your reader to point one time under every word as they read
  • Remind them to check the picture if they get stuck!
While we hope your child will be excited to show off these new skills, please know: one of our main goals is to have the students fall in love with reading.  Feel free to read the books that come home  to your child!

Researcher's Workshop:  This week we will do some independent research!  Each student will choose an animal to learn more about using books and iPads and will even create that animal using art supplies.  Our goal is to present these to the class to share our learning.
